The Causes Behind Lebanon's Food Crisis

Poverty

The aftermath of the explosions at the Beirut port, alongside a rapidly depreciating local currency and the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, have pushed an increased number of individuals into poverty. Currently, nearly all Syrian refugee households in Lebanon are grappling with extreme poverty.

Food Shortages

Lebanon's economic and political turmoil has led to widespread food shortages in many households. Presently, the escalation of conflict in Ukraine poses a looming threat of soaring food prices, potentially making essential food items unaffordable. Lebanon heavily relies on Ukraine for over half of its wheat imports.

Financial Crisis

From 2019 to June 2021, Lebanon's national currency underwent a staggering depreciation, losing over 90% of its value. By May 2021, the World Food Programme noted a staggering 340% surge in the cost of the essential food basket.
